Dimensions of Concrete Blocks
Dimensions of Concrete Blocks – Size Does Matter
Regardless of what people say, size does matter, at least when it comes to the dimensions of concrete blocks and the applications they are going to be used to complete. Dimensions of concrete vary greatly. They usually depend on what the concrete block will be used for. Concrete blocks used for foundation blocks will be larger than ones used for decorative purposes.
Another important factor to keep in mind is that the dimensions of concrete blocks vary from one country to another. Knowing this is not life changing for most people but for the traveling construction worker it could be a very big deal.
Here are the dimensions for several different styles of blocks:
- Hollow concrete blocks -- 440 mm x 215 mm x 100 mm
- Foundation trench blocks – 440 mm x 215 mm x 300 mm
- Solar blocks – Varies but the standard is 440 mm x 215 mm x 100 mm
- Lightweight concrete blocks – Varies based on the style chosen
The length and height of most concrete blocks is fairly consistent at 440 mm long and 215 mm high. The variable in most blocks is in the width, which depends on what the block is designed for. Trench blocks are obviously wider because they are supporting the weight of the building on top of them. However, there is a multitude of concrete blocks available on the market. While there are standard sizes for concrete blocks, specialty blocks can be found in a wide variety of dimensions.
Calculating Concrete Block Needs
When planning a project that requires concrete blocks a calculation of how many concrete blocks are needed for the project is a good idea for budget purposes. There are online calculators that can help determine how many blocks it will take to complete a project based on the size of the project. Of course, the mathematician in the family or a skilled project manager should also be able to determine how many concrete blocks are needed as well.
Once concrete blocks are purchased they are not generally returnable and so it is easier to know how many are needed rather than guess and wind up with an overflow of blocks that have no real purpose. This is what makes knowing the sizes of concrete block an important part of planning a project that uses them. Simply put, they are too heavy to move over and over again for no reason.
Although the size of concrete blocks vary from one country to another it is not likely that the average home builder is going to care what size a concrete block is in the Philippines unless they happen to be moving there; however, knowing the sizes in their own country is vital to calculating material needs and planning budgets for construction projects.
